Background

James McIntyre founded the company in 1946 when he was primarily involved in fruit production and general arable farming. Already a well respected name in the local community for fruit production, he diversified in the 1960's by propagating tomato and other vegetable plants for sale to local businesses. At the same time he moved away from producing the fruit to concentrate on raspberry cane production and it is from this that the soft fruit side has developed to what it is today.

The Garden Centre was opened in 1973 and has gradually expanded over the years. At the same time the landscaping service got underway when James' eldest son David joined his father in the business. It was started as a planting service but has now grown to cover all aspects of hard and soft landscaping and is now run by Ben, David's younger brother.

The florist shop was started in the 1980's when James' second daughter Maureen studied and qualified in floristry.

Present Day

Today the core of the business is the soft fruit propagation. We currently have 32 acres of ground, distributed throughout the county, mainly within a 10 mile radius of the nursery. Every year new ground has to be found and planted in March month. In September the two year old canes are lifted and brought into our nursery where they are potted and dispatched to Garden Centres throughout the UK . This process continues throughout most of the year, as soft fruit becomes more and more popular, so the demand for the plants continues to grow.

The Garden Centre has grown in recent years with most of the site under cover to enable customers to browse in comfort during inclement weather. It also ensures that the plants are kept in tip top condition, protected from the elements.

The Florist Shop is based within the main garden centre premises where there is always a varied selection of good quality flowers on display.

At present there are six members of the McIntyre family actively involved in the business which employs five full time staff and up to twenty part time during our busy autumn season.

The company premises is located on the A94 about half a mile out of the centre of Blairgowrie. The site is part of the original Moyness Farm and the family house.
